Puzzles: Rem's Ark

From 2003-2008 I was lucky enough to serve as an editorial cartoonist for the print edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a daily Hearst newspaper.

One of my favorite assignments involved the inauguration of the central library branch of Seattle Public Library. This library involved a $193 million tax levy; architectural star Rem Koolhaus won the commission.

After the library was erected -but before the books appeared- I attend a press tour of the library. For whatever reason I felt myself listening for animals. There were chartreuse elevators, there were bamboo floors, there were incredible windows. But no animals.

My editors, Kimberly Mills and Mark Trahant, chose my “King Rem” drawing for the “Rem’s Bling” editorial spread – the choice to hire a non-Seattle architect was criticized by the local population.

And yet whenever I visit that library I still look for paw prints and claw prints. The Pacific Northwest is nothing without its critters.
